Year 5

Class teachers: Mrs Bolland and Miss Gilpin

Supported by: Miss Akhtar, Mrs Detchon and Mr Teasdale

In Year Five we will learn about a variety of exciting topics. In English we will be reading a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry to inspire us and help us to write stories, diary entries, poems, a balanced argument and even a transmission from Mars!  In maths we will continue to develop our knowledge of number facts, including fractions, decimals and percentages and volume. We will continue to improve our reasoning and problem-solving skills. In science we will be investigating a wide range of topics, such as materials and their properties, unbalanced forces, the earth and space and the human life cycle.

We will also be learning about mountains and oceans in geography and the Vikings and Greeks in History.  In Art and Design we will create portraits with mixed media, develop our drawing skills, and in D.T. we will design bridges and create our own mechanical systems with levers and pulleys.

In computing we will be programming and making short films using iMovie, and in PSHE we will learn more about how to keep safe as our independence increases. We will continue to develop our knowledge of Spanish, perform and compose in music and develop our knowledge of Christianity and Sikhism.

And if that isn’t enough to keep us busy, outside the classroom we will go swimming each week, have a residential to Nell Bank in Ilkley and visit local high schools to start to understand what lies ahead after Primary School!

In year 5 P.E. is every Thursday and Friday.  Children should come to school in their PE kit (black shorts or jogging bottoms, a uniform t-shirt and sweatshirt and a pair of trainers).

Please make sure your child brings a school bag, water bottle and their reading book to school every day. It would also be great if you could listen to your child read at least three times a week and fill in their reading record.

Come and speak to us outside the Year 5 classrooms in the morning or after school if you have any questions.
