Our work in Year 3 is based on finding the answers to questions in history about the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age as well as the Egyptians and what was important to them. In geography, we will be asking if all settlements are the same and why people live near volcanoes. In science we will study rocks and soil, movement and nutrition, forces and magnets, light and shadows and plant reproduction. In art and design, we will develop our drawing skills, craft and design Ancient Egyptian scrolls and explore sculpture through abstract shape and space. In D.T. we will find out about cooking and nutrition and eating seasonally, cross stitch and applique and how to construct a castle.
In English we will use a variety of texts to support our writing. Some of these include: ‘The Stone Age Boy’, ‘The Last Polar Bears’ and ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine.’ We will continue to develop our writing skills using extended noun phrases (adjectives), adverbs, time adverbials and a range of connectives.
In maths we will be doing lots of work on place value and using the column written method to add and subtract two 3 – digit numbers. We will also be practising our times tables. It would be great if you could help your child to learn their 3, 4 and 8 times tables as well as practising their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
To support Year 3 with their reading, we encourage parents to read regularly at home, preferably at least three times a week. An overview of the weekly spellings will be given out at the start of every half term, and the children will have weekly assignments set on Spelling Shed which they need to complete. You will find their passwords in their reading records.
Year 3 have P.E every Thursday and Friday. Children should come to school in their PE kit on these days (black shorts or jogging bottoms, a uniform tee-shirt and sweatshirt and a pair of trainers).
If you would like to talk to us about anything, the end of the day is usually the best time so feel free to come and see us.
