Year 2

Class teachers: Ms Foster, Mrs Williams and Miss Randall

Supported by: Mrs Rowland, Mrs Kauser, and Mrs Woodburn

In Year 2, children continue to develop their knowledge of phonics by progressing through the Read, Write Inc Scheme. Learning to read so that children can read to learn is an essential skill. The children continue to be taught at their stage rather than their age to best support their progress. Children are encouraged to read for pleasure and across the curriculum. We ask that children bring their book bag to school every day and are reading at home at least three times a week. Comments on your child’s reading record are appreciated.

In maths, children will be taught about place value to tens and ones so they can add and subtract amounts within 100. This is initially supported by a range of maths equipment with a view for the children to use pencil and paper methods eventually. Multiplication is introduced by counting in steps of 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s, then making equal groups. Children are expected to learn these as times tables. Division is introduced as making equal groups by sharing equally or investigating how many of a certain group are in a number. Fractions are investigated as halves, thirds and quarters of both shapes and numbers. Children will also learn about shape, statistics, weights and measures.

In science, we will find out about several types of habitats, including microhabitats.  We will find out about life cycles and health. Materials and their properties will allow us to explore how materials are used purposefully. We will also learn about plant growth and plant-based materials. In ICT, we will learn how to manipulate text and pictures, including photos and learn how to use ICT and the internet safely. We will learn how to write algorithms through Debug and Scratch Jnr.

During R.E. lessons the children will develop their understanding of Hinduism, including visiting a Hindu Temple. In history, we will learn about the role of the monarch and what we can learn from a soldier’s story. We will then investigate what school was like for children in the past. In geography we will be exploring hot and cold climates and thinking about which kind of place we would prefer to live. We will also name and locate the continents and oceans of the world and consider what it is like to be by the coast.

In art and design we will begin to understand tone and texture using a variety of mark-making materials. We will then explore colour using paint. Finally, we will try our hand at sculpture through modelling with clay. D.T. lessons will provide children with opportunities to gain experience about cooking and nutrition to help ensure a balanced diet. We will create structures by making a chair for baby bear. We will then use wheels and axles to create moving vehicles.

Year 2 have P.E. lessons every Wednesday and Thursday. Children will need to come to school wearing black joggers or shorts and trainers.

If you’d like to chat to us about anything, we are available before school or after school.
