Year 1

Class teachers: Miss Firth, Mrs Stamer and Miss Bourke

Supported by: Miss Manson (Phonics lead), Miss Rasalan and Mr Gooch

Throughout Year 1, children continue to develop phonics via the Read Write Inc. programme. Children are taught at their stage rather than their age to maximize opportunities for success and progress. We would like parents to help us by listening to their child read at least three times a week and writing in their reading diary.

In English, we aim for children to write simple sentences, with correct spelling or using their phonic knowledge, using accurate letter formation and punctuation.

In mathematics, our initial focus is on developing a strong understanding of numbers 0–10, as this underpins future mathematical learning. Children learn to recall number bonds and related subtraction facts (for example, 6 + 2 = 8, so 8 − 2 = 6). By the end of the year, children are expected to reliably add and subtract one-digit numbers and to work with one- and two-digit numbers. As the year progresses, multiplication and division are introduced through counting forwards and backwards in multiples of 2, 5, and 10.

In science, children explore the world around them through key topics such as living things and their habitats, animals Including humans, plants, everyday materials, and seasonal changes. Learning is practical and hands-on, encouraging curiosity, observation, and questioning through simple experiments and investigations.

R.E. focuses on Christianity. Children are also introduced to key concepts such as celebrations, special people, and stories from other major world religions.  In geography, we learn about hot and cold places, seasonal changes, compass directions, and the countries and seas of the United Kingdom. In history, we begin to develop an understanding of the past by exploring changes within living memory, such as technology, family life, and toys. We also learn about significant people and events beyond their immediate experience.

In art and design, we learn about colour, line, shape, texture, and form through drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. Activities include colour mixing, creating 3D sculptures, and learning about artists to inspire creativity. In D.T. children follow a simple design process – design, make, and evaluate – while exploring mechanisms, structures, textiles, and cooking and nutrition.

Year 1 have P.E. lessons every Monday and Thursday. Children should come to school wearing trainers and black joggers or shorts. P.E. lessons include dance, gymnastics, yoga, and the development of basic skills such as throwing, catching, and participating in team games.

If you have any questions, please speak to a member of the Year 1 team at the beginning or end of the day.
